When I was young, we lived in the country, with a few other families close enough to play together. Altogether, there were maybe ten or twelve kids near enough in age to play together. Our favorite pastime in the summer was softball; we would choose up sides and play for hours in a vacant field, until we were called home. There was no minimum or maximum innings. The littler kids were matched up with an older one so that they could play, too. When a good hitter was up to bat, everyone backed up a little, when a little kid was on the plate, we came in a little.
